What is it? Ferrous fumarate is an iron supplement used to treat and prevent iron deficiency anaemia. A lack of iron affects the development of the red blood cells and causes a reduction in the number of red blood cells found in the body (iron deficiency anaemia). Therefore, ferrous fumarate tablets are used to prevent or as a iron deficiency anaemia treatment. Iron helps the body to make healthy red blood cells which carry oxygen around the body. Some things such as blood loss, pregnancy or too little iron in your diet can make your iron supply drop too low, leading to anaemia.

The following are reasons why anaemia may develop:

  • Heavy periods.
  • Diet low in iron.
  • Diet low in vitamin B12 or folic acid.
  • Infections, such as malaria.

Dosage:
To treat anaemia: One tablet, taken 2 to 3 times a day

To prevent anaemia: One tablet, taken 1 to 2 times a day

For children under the age of 12, the doctor will use your child’s age or weight to work out the right dose

Do not exceed your recommended dosage

Ferrous fumarate works best when you take it on an empty stomach. Take it 30 minutes before eating, or 2 hours after eating. But if it upsets your stomach, you can take it with or just after food.
